GO-TO-HIGH SCHOOL, GO-TO-COLLEGE
The "Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College" program, established in 1922, concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. Statistics prove the value of this extra impetus in making the difference in the success of young African-American men, given that school completion is the single best predictor of future economic success. Through the Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College educational initiative, young men receive information and learn strategies that facilitate success. Alpha men provide youth participants with excellent role models to emulate.
A VOTELESS PEOPLE IS A HOPELESS PEOPLE
In the 1930's, The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. implemented "A Voteless People is a Hopeless People," a national program aimed at increasing voter participation for African Americans. During this era, blacks were legally allowed to vote because of the Fifteenth Amendment of 1875, yet they continued to experience discriminatory practices and other obstacles during the election season. Faced with poll taxes, threats of violence, a lack of financial resources, as well as a sufficient understanding of the voter registration process, African Americans struggled to take full advantage of their suffrage. Since its inception, the program has maintained steady progress in increasing voter turnout for the black community. In the 1990's, the program began using town hall meetings and candidate forums in effort to increase the political awareness of the African American demographic, so that voters can make the most informed decisions possible at the polls.
BROTHER'S KEEPER
In a meeting on November 7, 1999 for the Alpha Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, the idea was born with inspiration from Brother A. Charles Haston for a new program. His frustration with the fraternal treatment of mature brothers led to the start of Brother’s Keeper in December of 1999, and before long it was made a National Program on July 23, 2010 at the 90th General Convention. Brother’s Keeper strives to assist, provide, and ensure a brother and/or his spouse’s capability of meeting basic living necessities including dealing with retirement, health issues, and lack of resources such as money or a support system. The main objectives of the program are to assist, provide, and ensure the safety and well-being of Alphas and their families.
